In March 2004, after 2 years of network planning, securing funding and negotiating hardware, dark fibre, user services and ownership agreements, GTAnet secured a 20 year IRU agreement for the use of dark fibre to each of its founding members’ institutions. These fibres terminate at one of two GTAnet points of presence (PoP) sites at York University and the University of Toronto. GTAnet owns and operates switching / routing equipment at each of these two locations and interconnects with the ORION Network at the York PoP site and at 151 Front St, Toronto.

Additionally, GTAnet has secured fibre strands between the PoP sites and to 151 Front St, Toronto which is the main telecommunications industry interconnect point for Ontario. GTAnet also negotiated a reciprocal agreement with ORION for redundant backup auto-failover fibre paths across their respective fibres.

GTAnet delivered its’ first production fibre connection in June 2004. GTAnet is the largest advanced research and education (R&E) regional network in Ontario with 185 route Km (640 fibre Km) of dark fibre in Toronto.
